They often share the same jar, but caperberries and capers are not the same. Both come from the Capparis spinosa plant, yet they differ in flavour, texture, and culinary purpose.
Bud vs fruit
Capers are the unopened flower buds, picked before they bloom. Caperberries are the mature fruit that forms after the flower opens — harvested with their stem still attached, and noticeably larger.
Flavour & texture
Capers are intense, tangy, and concentrated. Caperberries are milder and juicier, with a pleasant seedy crunch and a softer, more rounded flavour.
How to use each
Use capers chopped or whole in sauces (tartare, puttanesca, piccata), salads, and garnishes. Serve caperberries whole — as a cocktail and antipasti garnish, on cheese and charcuterie boards, or alongside cured fish.
